LO1.1 Types of Radio Programming

 National 

Kiss, BBC Radio 1-5, TALK SPORT

National radio stations are the biggest radio stations broad casted nation wide across the UK. This means that they are only available in one country and can be broadcasted all around that country. They can be controlled by the government or be independent from the government and be controlled by a government, such as Classic FM.These radio stations were created when the Broadcasting Act was passed in 1990 which allowed Independent radio stations to be launched nationally.

Public

The term public service broadcasting refers to broadcasting intended for public benefit rather than to serve purely commercial interests 

Regional

BBC Scotland, BBC Radio Whales , Capital 

There are 17 different Regional stations in the UK. These are broadcasted to different countries and regions depending on which country you are in so if you were in Whales you could not listen to BBC ScotlandA regional variation generally refers to times when a radio staton or television station silmountiniously broadcasts different programmes, continuity or advertisements to different parts 

Community 

South Humberside community Radio

Community radio is a radio service offering a third model of radio broadcasting in addition to commercial and broadcasting servicing. Community stations serve geographic communities and communities of interest. They are run, owned and influenced by the people that listen to them as the community uses them to tell their own stories and experiences 

Internet

An interest broadcast means that s serves beneficially the well being or interests of the public or society generally. 

Local

 There are around 250 commercial stations and these are known as IRL ( Independent Radio Stations ) and 40 BBC local radio stations. The local radio broadcast stations are broadcasted to a smaller region of the country such as a local town, also due to the broad casting act, most local radio stations are now independent apart from the 40 BBC Radio stations that are local

DAB Digital Radio

A new way of accessing radio it provides a way of listening to a number of different radio stations not available of the FM. To listen to Digital Radio, you'll need a dedicated DAB radio. e.g. BFBS UK. It helps broadcasts from a network of transmitters throughout the UK. It is an efficient way of providing more radio stations on less frequencies.

Interent Radio 

This is a way of listening and screaming radio online through you computer or even your smart phone but as a result of this you will require an internet connection to listen to them

Satellite Radio

 This is a radio service in which the signals are transmitted or retransmitted by a communications satellite. e.g. Astra 2e. This broadcasts over a wider geographical area, often continents and is intended for people who drive vehicles

Hospital Radio

Hospital radio is a radio created exclusively for hospital patients, primarily in the United Kingdom as it has been found to be beneficial to patients when they are in the hospital and they can have something to listen to. They are ran by volunteers so it doesn't cost the hospital anything e.g. Hospital Radio Bedford

Student Radio

This is a type of radio station that is run by the students of a college, university or other educational institution. They are often used to train people in using the equipment or two broadcast educational programme

Pirate Radio

Pirate radio or a pirate radio station is a radio station that broadcasts without a valid license. These were very prevalent before the broadcasting act of 1990 when people could only listen to government ran radio stations which didn't have many of the type of music or programmes that people wanted. e.g. Radio London
